Thailand has long been known for producing awesome action flicks, and this list covers some of the best.

The Iron Man

This 1975 war epic stars Krung Srivilai and Sombat Methanee. Although it is filled with exciting action, it also tells the story of heartfelt characters and their reactions to the violence of war.

Danger City

This 1982 Thai action film tells the tale of a ruthless hit man as he battles a mafia chief.

The Bodyguard

Well done and superbly acted, “The Bodyguard” solidified Thailand’s reputation as an action movie powerhouse in 2004.

Ong-Bak

This classic was particularly popular in the west thanks to Tony Jaa’s direction and its nonstop action. The second film in the series tells the tale of a young boy learning all the martial arts, and the third is a revenge story with plenty of riveting action scenes.

The Protector

Tony Jaa also directed this action blockbuster, and the plot is similar to his earlier films, but the action is even more intense.

Born to Fight

This film features less martial arts and more gun violence than others on this list, but it is definitely a Thai action film classic.

Mercury Man

This sci-fi and fantasy action flick is a great introduction to the world of Thai films for children, but adults will enjoy it too.

Thai cinema is filled with legends in terms of actors and film directors from the onset of the country’s film through to the new wave of the 21st century. The first Thai produced feature film, known as paphayon or nang in the Thai language was produced in 1927. Released as Double Luck, the first Thai film was directed by Luang Anurakratthakarn.

In Thai cinema the first matinee idols paired together in numerous films were Mitr Chaibancha and Petchara Chaowaraj. After the success of their first film together Pimchawee’s Love Diary led to a series of collaborations throughout the 1960s.

Socially conscious movies became popular in the 1970s following the student uprisings in Thailand of 1973, and the attacks on demonstrating students in 1976. Chatrichalerm Yukol is one of the Thai cinematic legends to become popular during this period; during the 1980s Yukol’s action movies based on police and government corruption became hugely popular. Sombat Matanee often starred in the action movies of Yukol, along with his popular onscreen love interest Aranya Namwong.

Matanee once held the world record for the most film appearances of over 600, including the 2000 international success Tears of the Black Tiger. This was the first Thai film to be shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and was directed by Thai new wave director Wisit Sasanatieng. The director mixed 1950s melodrama with modern action in Tears of the Black Tiger and 2004s Citizen Dog to become an internationally acclaimed film director.

The five best Thai movies of all time have to be “The Victim”, “Ong-Bak”, “Khan Kluay”, “Blissfully Yours”, and “My Girl”. These films were picked for their uniqueness, and diversity over a genre of martial arts, romance, comedy, and horror films.

The first movie we picked was “The Victim”, which starred Pitchanart Sakakon as “May”. Her performance was very believable. She was hired by the police to re-enact the deaths of murder victims. She went on to act in “The Fatality” and “Saturday Killer”.

“Ong-Bak” is probably one of the greatest martial arts movies, and has to be on the list.Is this new to you? Catch up here This movie starred Tony Jaa. Jaa plays the role of Ting, who must go to the big city, and take on the underworld, when the head of a statue sacred to a village is stolen.

The movie “Khan Kluay” was a groundbreaking introduction for Thailand’s first computer-animated feature. Digitally animated movies have become popular in the industry, so seeing this movie come out of Thailand was special.

You couldn’t have a top movie list without the film “Blissfully Yours”. This romantic movie was highly praised at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.

Finally, one of the funniest movies to come out of Thailand was “My Girl”, which starred Charlie Trairattana. We’ve all gone through crushes, and this takes you back to your youth, or shows how present-day love is put into funny situations.

The History of Cinematography in Thailand

The origins of cinema in Thailand can be traced back to the beginning of film in the late nineteenth century. The way the story goes is when King Chulalongkorn was visiting Switzerland his journey was recorded and brought to Thailand to be presented. This moment in history created a stir and Thailand’s interest in film making was born. By the 1930′s Thailand had a burgeoning cinema scene inside its city walls. Thailand had many production companies and movies were being shown regularly throughout Bangkok. 16mm hit the scene after World War II and hundreds of films were created during this time that were rife with action and violent scenes being depicted in the movies. It wasn’t until the late 90′s that Thai cinema had a full on resurgence of cinema. Due to the competing force of Hollywood movies Thai cinema kind of fell off the maps throughout the seventies and eighties. Thailand experienced and new wave of movie making in the nineties which is still cherished today. As Thai cinema continues to compete in the world of movie making, there has been a lot of development both in terms of cinematography and mise en scene that has made Thai cinema unique and historically important.
